What about Sleep Medications?

Using sleep medications to improve sleep

If you have seen a doctor for insomnia or sleep problems and your situation is severe enough, chances are you have been prescribed some kind of sleep medication. Sleeping pills can help with insomnia and sleep problems and may be necessary for a while, if your conditions are debilitating and you are unable to function during the days. However, the shorter period of time you have to use them the better. It's never a good idea to be dependent on drugs of any kind.

Potential side effects

There are several different medications that are prescribed for sleeping problems. Most of them, if not all, come with some kind of side effect. Be aware of what that side effect can be. A typical side effect of some sleeping pills is depression. With others, side effects are limited to headaches, and dizziness.

Also, find out in what way you will be affected when you stop taking the medication. Will you suffer some kind of withdrawal symptoms? Will you suffer insomnia as a result of ending your medication?

These are all questions you need to ask yourself before starting a medication routine.

Consider alternative treatments for your sleep problems

For some people, their sleep problems are so debilitating that they don't see an alternative to taking medications. If you do not belong to that group, you should carefully consider the benefits of taking medications.

Sleeping pills will not resolve any underlying issues that may have caused your insomnia or sleeping problems in the first place. Chances are that you will again need sleeping pills in the future.

Furthermore, when we use sleeping pills to deal with the situation, we are less likely to think about other ways to solve our sleeping problems. We may be less inclined to put in the effort to really combat the underlying issues and create lasting change where it really matters. We may also be less likely to take other proactive steps that can help us sleep better.

There may be situations when sleeping pills are necessary. Just don't allow yourself to see sleeping pills as the easy fix to your insomnia or sleep problems. That way of thinking always backfires. In reality, when we are faced with difficulties of any kind, there are ususally no 'easy way out'. Taking that route only leads to new problems further down the road.
